It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, uncle and friend, John Reid Sheaves, age 80, on Monday, November 7, 2016 at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. John was born in Port Aux Basques, Newfoundland on September 20, 1936, the son of the late George and Annie (Short) Sheaves. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. John worked as a steward and later as an oiler aboard the Marine Atlantic Vessels for 44 years until his retirement. He loved spending time with family and friends, playing cards, camping and fishing. He also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and going for drives to “Newfoundland Island” the Ballast Grounds. John is survived by his children, Verna (Jimmie) Cann, Herb Sheaves, Lisa Sheaves (John), Corinna (Terry) MacAskill; by his grandchildren, Jody (Roddie) Ferguson, Brad (Janet) Cann, Corinne (Matthew) King, Troy (Renee) Cann, Jimmy (Jackie) Sheaves, Kyle (Dani) Sheaves, Bernie Ingraham, Brody MacAskill and Courtney MacAskill; by his great grandchildren, Clayton, Mitchell, Olivia, Carter, Keslyn, Anna, Jamison and Ethan; nieces and nephews and also by his daughter-in-law, Lorraine Hughes.
John was predeceased by his wife, Ada (Williams) Sheaves in 2015; by his brothers, Jim, Isaac and Melvin; sisters, Ann, Mary, Roberta and June, and by a brother, George in infancy. Special thanks to the staff of the 5th Floor of the Northside General Hospital for the kindness shown to our Dad and to our family during this very difficult time.
Visitation for John will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in the Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ron Coole officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.wjdooley.com.
