Donald Ralph Reid, ONS
With hearts filled with sadness the family of Donald Ralph Reid ONS announce his passing on November 17, 2016 in his 94th year. Born on May 29, 1922 in Joggins, N.S., he was the son of the late James and Daisy (Willis) Reid.
A hard worker for most of his life he retired from the Nappan Research Station in 1986, but true to his nature another venture called and in 1989 he, along with his family opened the Joggins Fossil Centre. His love for the Joggins Fossil Cliffs and the treasures they held were a lifelong passion. In 1999 he had the title of “Keeper of the Cliffs” bestowed upon him and enjoyed sharing his knowledge and passion with young and old alike. Don sat on the committee who sought approval to have Joggins considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and in 2008 realized this dream. His vast collection, of Joggins Fossils, were turned over to the Joggins Fossil Institute. He has been presented with many awards for his work and along with the Paul Harris Fellowship award he recently was inducted into the Order of Nova Scotia. His family was one of his greatest accomplishments and one to which he was very proud.
He is survived by his children, Donna Swim, Halifax, NS; Doug(Rose), Maccan, NS; John(Barb), Maccan, NS; Diana(John), Kingston, ON; Donald(Lynn), Lyon’s Brook, NS and Len(Darlene), Maccan, NS; 16 grandchildren, 15 great- grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Eleanor(Gabriel), daughter Gloria Melanson and her husband Ovila, grandchildren Joseph and Mary Melanson, son-in-law Gary Swim, brothers James “Murray”, Robert, Horace, Guy, Douglas, Claude, John”Wally” and sisters Marion Pearl “Hattie” Brown, Stella White, Norma Ruddick and Goldie Knight.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Furlong-Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst (667-8777) with visiting hours on Wednesday November 23, 2016 from 6 to 8 PM. Funeral service will be held on Thursday November 24, 2016 at 11 AM from the funeral home with Ruth Gamble DLM officiating. Interment will follow in Latta Cemetery. Donations in Don’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Society or a charity of your choice.
