John Zerr

Passed on: November 22nd, 2016

John Cosmos Zerr passed away November 22, 2016 at West Park Crossing Retirement Community in Moose Jaw, SK. John was born November 21, 1924 in Mankota, SK, where he grew up on the family farm before enlisting in the Regina Rifles at 17 to fight in the Second World War. He later transferred to the Winnipeg Rifles and remained in Europe as part of the Occupation Forces before returning home. John was grateful to have done his part, and was very humble about his experience as he was always aware of the price that was paid. After the war, John moved to Moose Jaw and worked at Christy Grants Men’s Wear and later at Western Grocers. He eventually found his place at Canada Post where he worked as a Letter Carrier until he retired. John was a faithful man who regularly attended Central Lutheran Church with his family. He served as a Council member, and supported the church throughout his life. John loved to talk with people, which is why his job as a postman was so appropriate. Walking was a huge part of his life. After retirement, John spent many mornings walking with his buddies (“The Grumpy Old Men”) in Wakamow Valley Park, followed by coffee at their favorite places. John loved to experience nature in the park--having birds feed from his hand and seeing the deer—and it was one of his favorite times of the day. John loved family life and enjoyed providing a comfortable and well-maintained home for them. He spent many hours making improvements inside and outside of their home, and loved to see a well manicured lawn, trimmed hedges and painted fences. John is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lois, his children, Cheryl (Nathan) and Kevin (Heidi), his sister, Frieda and brother Gordon, sisters-in–law Kay, Marion (Terrence), and brother-in-law, Duane and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Nickolas and Katherine, and his brother Edmund. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. A memorial will be held at a later date, time and place to be announced.
In living memory of John, a memorial planting will be made by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home. Please sign the memorial register at website: www.wjjonesandson.com (Obituaries).
