Passed peacefully away in his home on Bell Island, NL at the age of 80, surrounded by his wife and family. Predeceased by his parents Israel and Hannah Gear, grandsons Randy Wilson Jr. and Joel Thornhill, brother Nathaniel Hammond and sisters Ada Galway (Michael), Jean Kent (Richard), Veronica Mercer (Ennis), Beatrice Mercer (William) and Mary Power (Michael). Leaving to mourn his loving and devoted wife of 58 years Inez Gear (nee Noseworthy), and caring father to Diane (Ron), Betty (Randy), John (Dolores), Dorothy (Randy), Gale (George), Dale, Christine (Stephen), Roberta (Rob) and Candi-Lee (Scott). Proud grandfather to numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren residing in both Newfoundland and Ontario. Dear brother to Sarah Reid (Dougal), Belinda Reid (Gordon-deceased), Doris Penny (Baxter), Myrtle Gear, Mildred Dwyer (Gordon), and Lillian Hutchings (Bram-deceased). John will be greatly missed by long time friends Raymond Littlejohn, Patrick Mansfield and Richard Whitten (Dickie). As a loyal Legionnaire, John was a member of the firing party for over 30 years. He was a member of the Young Britons, a miner, as well an avid fisherman. John was affectionately known as "Poppy" to countless children. The Gear family would like to thank all the nieces, nephews, in-laws, family and friends who have provided support to our family throughout this difficult time. Special thanks to Dr. Laurie and the nursing staff at the Dr. Walter Templeton Hospital for the care given to John over the years. Resting at Pendergast's Funeral Home on Monday, November 28 from 12-4 pm and 7-9 pm, Tuesday, November 29 from 12-4 pm and 7-9 pm, and Wednesday, November 30 from 11-1:30 pm. Funeral Mass to follow at Jackson United Church with cremation to follow. Interment at a later date. Following the Funeral Mass, the Gear family would like to invite all family and friends to St. Cyprian's St. Mary's Anglican Church on Bell Island to celebrate John's life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Jackson United Church on Bell Island.
