Walter Jacob Baron
Walter Baron was born September 9, 1927 at Kincaid, Saskatchewan, and passed away November 4, 2016 at the Prairie View Health Centre in Mankota, Saskatchewan at the age of 89. He was the third of six sons born to Pete and Madge Baron. He is predeceased by his parents, brothers: Arnold, Herman, Reinhardt and Mark. Walter is survived by his wife of 63 years Elsie, brother Bryce (Jackie), sisters-in-law Marg (Arnold) and Anne (Mark); daughter Esther (Bud) Lynch of Sedley; son Brent (Joan) Baron of Mankota, grandchildren: Ryan (Eden) & Leeah and Kyle (Danielle) & Lacey (Cory) and great-grandchildren Damon and Sienna Baron as well as several nieces and nephews. In 1931, the family moved from Kincaid to Pete’s homestead in the McEachern District, southeast of Mankota. In 1933, they moved west to where Brent and Joan live today. Walter went to Aloha School. He later went to Calgary to study welding and tractor mechanics. He returned to the farm for the winters and worked construction in the summers. He was a Grade Foreman and operated a finishing cat and scraper for Henderson and Burton Road Construction. Walter married Elsie Loewen on May 18, 1953. Their first home was a trailer in a construction camp. They moved to a farm in the Wideview District in 1955. In 1966 they built a new house. Walter was a dedicated farmer and rancher. Herefords were his breed of choice. He fed cows this year and was still hauling this year’s hay bales in as late as August. He was a long time member of the Mankota Stockmen’s Weigh Co. and spent many hours working and sorting cattle and loading cattle onto the trains and later on to trucks. He drove school bus for six years and in bad winters would use a bombardier. He was known to witch and find water. Walter believed in his community and spent many hours volunteering his time and labour to help with community projects. He also played softball for the Wideview Wildcats, curled and attended hockey games. Walter had an artistic flare when it came to welding. He has built deck and step railings, decorations for their yard, and at age 85 he built gate signs for both his children. He also enjoyed fishing and playing cards. He will be missed and always be a part of our lives and thoughts. Funeral service was held Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at the Mankota Agricultural Hall, Mankota, SK with Reverend Neil Gilbert officiating. The Tribute was given by son-in-law Bud Lynch and memories were shared by Walter’s grandchildren. Urn bearer was grandson Ryan Lynch with Interment at Mankota Cemetery. Donations gratefully accepted for the Prairie View Health Centre, Mankota, SK. Arrangements entrusted to Ross Funeral Service, Assiniboia, SK.
