Aylward, Lionel William, 76, of Falmouth, Hants County, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 5, 2016 in the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born on March 26, 1940 in Windsor, N S. He was the son of the late Frederick Leon Aylward and Leah (Turbitt) Aylward. Lionel is survived by his loving wife, the former Susan Smith; son, John (Kathy) Aylward, daughter, Kim (Roger) Allen, son, Doug (Tammy) Aylward. Grandfather to Marc and Melissa, Isaac and Hannah, Jason and Jake and a great grandfather to Lily; sister, Bernice Aylward (B.C.) and her children Rick and Barb, several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his brother, Donald Aylward and brother-in-law, Robert Aylward. His first early full time employment was with Avon Valley Greenhouses in Falmouth from 1957 to 1963. Lionel was a carpenter by trade for over forty years. He worked for Swinamer & Eldridge Construction in Windsor, Steven& Fiske, A & M Construction and Dineen’s Construction and other companies in Halifax. He was a member of the carpenter union local #83. Lionel was a proud full time farmer since the age of 18 years. He loved working the land, and tending his cattle. He enjoyed gardening, playing rook and crib, reading Western novels while wearing his favorite knitted socks made with love by his daughter, dancing, watching the Blue Jays and weekend coffee dates with his boys and lobster feeds. In his early days he pulled tug of war, a sport carried on by his sons. He handled his cancer with strength and dignity. His expressions were “You gotta deal with the hand you're dealt” and “It is what it is”. The family would like to thank the health care teams in Halifax and Windsor for their care and compassion. Family flowers only please. Visitation was 7-9 pm Thursday, December 8, 2016 in the Lindsay Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Box 2218 Windsor, NS, B0N 2T0. Memorial Service was 2 pm Friday, December 9, 2016 in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Tom Henderson officiated. Interment was in the Centre Falmouth Cemetery, Falmouth. Donations in Lionel’s memory were requested to be made to the Hants Community Hospital “Palliative Care”, Canadian Cancer Society, The Centre Falmouth Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund, C/O Secretary Treasurer Larry Armstrong, 8 Town Rd., Falmouth, NS B0P 1L0 or charity of your choice.
