Donald Andrew Szakacs (July 29, 1940-December 6, 2016). It is with deep sorrow the family of Don announces that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday December 6th. Don was born and raised in Regina where his passion for sports flourished. He was especially skilled at baseball and basketball and loved to tell many stories of his playing days. His teaching career brought him to Swift Current where he met his future wife Marilyn (Robinson) and together they raised their family. Dad was an educator but his great ability and love came from coaching all the many athletes he was involved with. Dad coached a variety of sports over the years but the one he is most remembered for was wrestling and how he helped develop the sport in Swift Current. Dad was recognized with numerous awards through his coaching career, most notably the National Award for his contribution to the sport of wrestling, an Olympic Award from the Government of Canada for his contributions as a coach, and the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association Merit Award for his contribution to high school sport. Dad was very proud of his kids and didn't miss a game (and there were many) that they played in. That carried over as everyone grew and the Grandkids became the driving source of that pride. While many friends started to go south for the winter, Gramps always said he was going north so he could watch all the Grandkids. Over the years, Dad kept himself busy in his endless quest for arrowheads and his membership in the Archaeological Society. Other activities that kept him busy and active were bowling, curling, fishing, golf and his beloved Broncos. Don is survived by his wife Marilyn; son Shane (Shelley) and their children Shay, Tanner, Zach, and Max; daughter Sharolyn Simoneau (Luc) and their children Josh, Jordan, and Ashlyn; brother Jim; sister Bette Bodanis (Peter) and his best buddy of 60 years Digger MacBean. Rest peacefully Dad. A celebration of life service was held on Monday Dec 12th at 1:00 PM at the First United Church in Swift Current. In lieu of flowers, donations in Don's memory can be made to the Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to Warren's Funeral Home.
