Lavada Sand

Born In: Tompkins

Passed in: Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Passed on: November 21st, 2016

Lavada was the seventh in a family of twelve children. She was born 11 miles north of Tompkins, SK in the dining room of her Aunt Cora and Uncle John's farm on June 15, 1918. She outlived all her siblings and parents, and sadly 2 of her children, Ivan Klein and Donna Paradis (Klein). She attended school up to the 8th grade when she had to quit and work on other farms to help support the family. She didn't like the outside work much, so she learned to cook and clean and was a fabulous sewer and could just look at something in a store window and go home and make it the same and to fit whomever it was for. She met Albert Klein while working at his sister's farm for harvest and they were married in 1940. She had 6 children, Ivan, Donna and Bonna(twins),Irvin, Rosemarie, and Elvin. She had 26 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren plus several great-great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was widowed in April 1963 at the age of 41 with two children still in school. She was on her own and raised them herself on a very poor wage working as a maid at the Healy Hotel. She was a widow for 9 years at which time she married Harold Sand. He passed away in 1989. She also worked at The Palliser Senior Home in Swift Current in the kitchen with her sister Ann Dewar. She loved that job and had lots of laughs with her co-workers who all just loved her. She was very upset when the Government said she had to retire at 65. She was allowed to work one more year and had to quit at 66 years old. After retirement Lavada could not sit still, she volunteered at the Legion for the Tuesday dinners. Serving seniors and others with a cheerful smile, well into her 80's. She curled, played darts, and bowled, went to bingo often and loved to play crib where she got a 29 hand and her picture in the paper. She had many trophies for the games she played. Lavada had many friends throughout her life time. She never had a bad word to say about anyone. She was very generous even though she had very little. She never turned anyone away from her door and would give what she could, be it food, or a place to stay. She would say "We'll just put another potato in the pot and another plate at the table". Lavada's home stretch years were spent in Alberta with her grandchildren and other relatives close by to visit and celebrate each birthday. She was a very kind and gentle soul with a spicy independent streak that served her and her family well. We will miss you Mom. Lavada passed away in Calgary on November 21, 2016. The interment service took place at Mount Pleasant Burial Park, Swift Current SK and a service of remembrance will be held in June of 2017. Warren's Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
