It is with profound sadness that we advise George McCoubrey Andrew, 87, passed away peacefully in Lindsay, Ontario on January 8, 2017, with daughter Jane at his side, and the love of his life, Joyce, always on his mind, in his heart, and nearby. A loving husband for over 63 years, George and Joyce (nee Irvine) were inseparable and their love for each other, unending. Adored by his three daughters, Susan (Mark Wood), Jane (Michael Fobert) and Cindy (Charlie Robinson), Daddy, as they have always called him, was a wonderful, loving man who always had a song in his heart and sage words to share. Pre-deceased by son, Gordon, and siblings Marion, Billie and Erwin, he also leaves behind 8 wonderful grandchildren: Megan, Andrew, Elizabeth, Michael (Nolan), Kate and Alec (Fobert), Hope and Erin (Robinson); two loving sisters, Nellie [Ragnar] Ingelman of Halifax, Doris Andrew-Whalen (Connecticut), sister in law Marion Irvine and their families; along with many friends including best man and best friend, Ronnie Atkinson of Charlottetown. Born in New Glasgow Mills, PEI on September 8, 1929, to Leta McCoubrey and Blair Andrew, George fell in love with the game of golf at which he excelled – and worked as a way to help support his growing family and academic studies vis-à-vis summer time employment as a Class A golf professional at Green Gables Golf Course in Cavendish. A highlight of his life was the joy of sharing his knowledge and love of the game with others. A graduate of Prince of Wales College (now UPEI), George was a scholar who after serious deliberation, opted to leave the Island to pursue his Bachelor of Physical and Health Education (1953) and subsequently, while supporting a wife and three daughters, his Masters (1963) and Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology (1967). McGill is an institution that held a special place in his heart and for which he was very grateful, always sporting a McGill sticker on his rear car window and drinking coffee from his McGill mug. From Montreal, he and Joyce moved their family to Kingston so that George could pursue his research and teaching duties at Queen’s University, retiring as Director, School of Physical and Health Education in 1990. Retirement, until the age of 85 included golf, golf and more golf – but for the last 18 years his preference was to spend time on the Peterborough Golf & Country Club driving range, sharing his love of the game with others who felt the same. Only recently he mentioned that he had not swung a club in a year – but that he had enjoyed “a good run”. The Lord has called George home after a long and full life. We trust that as he walks those green fairways, no doubt humming a tune and swinging a club, and thinking about how to make the world a better place, he is at peace. Our hearts break though we know that he is keeping a watchful eye over us all. We love you and miss you terribly. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your charity of choice.
