James “Jim” Sillerud, age 93, formerly of the Abbey District and the Bentley, passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at the Meadows, Swift Current, SK. James “Jim” Donald Sillerud was born to Martin & Annette Sillerud on January 28, 1923 in Abbey, SK. He was a brother to three-year-old Marjorie and later, uncle to her three children — Robert McCoy, Jean McCoy, and Judy Blodgett. He received his education at the two-room school house in the rural community of Roe, in the Abbey district. Soon after completing his schooling, he enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces during WWII. He chose the Tank and Transport division, serving in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. After the Allied victory and his return to Canada, he purchased his father’s farm through the Department of Veteran’s Affairs to pursue a career in farming. In 1961, he married Margaret Tjeltveit, who was employed in the Swift Current Rural school system until her retirement. Jim’s recreational interests were diverse. He was an avid reader, enjoyed music and dancing, was self-taught in playing the violin, mouth organ, button accordion and spoons. He built his own skid shack, a motorcycle, a punt boat, miniature spinning wheels, guns, cannons, and a variety of rock jewelry. He enjoyed a trip to Norway, unfortunately, problems with his ears limited his socializing and travel. His need for workshop space led to the purchase of a home on Taylor Drive in Swift Current and later on, a retirement duplex. In July 2006, he chose life at the Bentley and enjoyed the lifestyle and activities offered there. A private family Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.
