It is with great sadness that we the family announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, John James DeYoung, age 72, after a brief illness, on Thursday, February 2,2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Arichat, he was the son of Mrs. Idella (Boudreau) Duyon and the late Edward Duyon. He was a patient man, a perfectionist, a jack of all trades and a skilled carpenter which was his labor of love. He always had a project to create a beautiful home for our family. He was an avid photographer. In his younger years, he was a gymnast, a life guard, a dancer and a scuba diver. He was always willing to help anyone in need and to lend a helping hand. Besides his mother, Idella, John is survived by his wife and best friend, Jeanette (Bates) DeYoung; children, Laura (Les), Shawn (Lisa), Jonathan (Natalee) and Jon-Paul; his precious grandchildren, Logan, Rian, Kayden and Stephanie; sister, Jean (Robbie) MacNeil; several nieces and nephews; the extended Bates family, as well as his good friends, Ray, Earl and Curtis.
Besides his father, Edward, he was predeceased by his mother and father in-law, Jennie and Paul Bates; sister-in-law, Mary Heald; brother-in-law, Winfred Bates. Visitation will be held Sunday, February 5, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Funeral Mass will take place 11 a.m. Monday, February, 6, 2017 at Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Sydney River with Father Bill Burke officiating. Interment to take place at a later date.
