THACKER, William Robert
November 12, 1935 – January 26, 2017

It is with profound sadness, we announce the passing of our father and our friend, Bill Thacker, at the age of 81 years. Bill leaves behind his four children, Terry (Paul) Prefontaine of Tsawwassen, Patti Rogers (Len) Haraburda of Calgary, Bert (Myline) Thacker of Grand Cayman, Bob (Peerapan) Thacker of Burnaby, as well as his seven grandchildren, Jamie, Kelly, Kate, Keith, Sue, Josh and recent arrival Abigail, and two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Simon. He also leaves behind three sisters, Elvie, Yvonne and Darlene as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Bill had many jobs growing up including ski patrol, dredging, heavy duty mechanic as well as working the family farm in Ochre River, Manitoba, before he got into the hotel business and relocated to Baldur, Manitoba in 1971. In 1973, he purchased the York Hotel in Swift Current, Saskatchewan and later purchased the Horseshoe Lodge in 1975 where he spent most of his later life managing, and in 1998 renovated the Horseshoe Lodge, retired that name and became part of the Days Inn chain.

Bill was a great supporter of the Swift Current Broncos, and many local charities. He enjoyed golf, and flying. Bill’s first plane was a Cessna 172, and later a Cessna 182 Sky Lane. His dream was to have a Piper J3 one day.

Bill was very active in Freemasonry, Scottish Rite, and the Shriners Club; he served as the President of the Swift Current Shriners Club in 1990. He looked forward to his annual fishing trip every summer to northern Saskatchewan with his sons. He also loved to travel, especially to Costa Rica where he had many friends and was always practicing his Spanish.

Most of all, he loved his family. He would touch everyone he met in some way; he had numerous friends and he always made time for a visit and often recounted funny stories over the years. “Dad, to the world you may be one person, but to us, you were the world.”

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Days Inn.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider making a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Delta View Hospital and the Dorothy Meadows Wing for the many years of loving care they provided to our Dad.
