Shirley Gertrude  Maddison

Shirley Gertrude Maddison, 83, passed away surrounded by her family at Westhaven, Port Alberni, B.C. on February 6, 2017. Born in Springhill, N.S. on March 28, 1934, she was the second daughter of the late Michael McPherson Moore, and Ivy Willa (Brown) Moore.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, William R. (Bill) Maddison, their son, Michael James Maddison and grandson, Mason William Maddison. Also sister-in-law and husband, Elaine (Maddison) and Robert Allen; sister-in-law, Barbara Moore of Springhill, N.S., and “sister”-niece, Paulette Tower-Welch of St. Dorothee, Que.; and three generations of nieces and nephews.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, as well as sisters, Evelyn Leona (Charles) Tower, Marion Audrey (Jack) Pyke, and brother, Garfield Michael Moore.
Shirley attended school in her home town of Springhill, N.S., and later attended Nova Scotia Normal College in Truro, N.S. earning her teachers license, after which she taught elementary classes in Springhill, and Lantz, N.S. (also school principal in Lantz), and later while teaching in Port Alberni, B.C. she earned her bachelor of Education Degree at Victoria University. She retired in 1994.
Having close ties with family members “back home”, Shirley and her family made numerous trips across Canada to spend summers in Nova Scotia at family cottages at Cameron and North Port beaches where countless card games of the family’s favourite “45’s” were enjoyed..
A ”born teacher”, devoted spouse and mother, a wonderful sister/sister-in-law, a beloved auntie, and a special friend to many, Shirley Maddison will long be remembered with smiles and laughter.
Following Shirley’s wishes, no formal service will be held and a private family gathering will take place at a later date. Cremation has taken place. Memories and condolences can be shared with the family at www.chapelofmemories.ca.
