With deep sadness we announce that Ethel “Rose” (Woodman) Malpass of Kentville/Halifax, 85, died of pneumonia on Feb 9, 2017 with family by her side in Camp Hill Veterans Hospital, where she had been since late December after a fall. Rose was born in Kentville on June 6, 1931, the youngest of six children of Melvie Denzil Woodman and Clara Rose (Woodman) Woodman. She was predeceased by siblings Lorna (Ralph) Evans, Ruth (George) Bell, Ralph (Grace) Woodman, Murray (Lilian) Woodman, and Malcolm in infancy. Rose is survived by her daughter Melanie Rose, and son-in-law Allan Rappoldt, Halifax, and beloved grandchildren Emma Rose and Liam Patrick, in whose lives she fully participated and found much joy. Rose was best friends with her sister Lorna and a dear aunt to Lorna’s children, Valerie Evans, Halifax, and Dr. Jacquelyn Evans, Philadelphia, and their children, Julie and Tom Chamagne, and Joshua, Jeremy, and Jocelyn Ewing. Rose is also survived by special nieces and nephews-in-law Judy (Bell) and Jack Flynn, Cheryl (Woodman) Lucas and Alain Chamagne, numerous nieces and nephews, and many dear friends including Eurda, Mary, Grace, Laura, Helen, Helen, and Annette. Rose grew up in Kentville, and graduated from KCA in 1949. She worked in the Dispensary at McDougall’s Drug Store, then joined the Canadian Air Force and was stationed in Quebec and Ontario, and later lived and worked in New England (Maine, Boston and New Hampshire) before returning to Kentville in 1967. Rose was involved with the Kentville Youth Association from 1947-49 as a KCA student, and again from 1969-74 as a parent, worker, and executive member. She was a member of the Kentville United Baptist Church, a Sunday School Teacher, and a Brownie Leader. Rose worked a series of stay-at-home jobs when Melanie was young, and was then employed by Sears, Dr. B. Price, and for 24 years by the Kings County District School Board. One of her great pleasures was organizing adult education classes. She retained many friends from her working days, especially enjoying “board meetings” at the pub. After retiring, she researched and edited “Berwick”, a history of the town, written by the late Ron Illsley. Rose volunteered with many Kentville organizations over the years including the VRH Gift Shop, the Courthouse Museum, Kentville Library, and the Food Bank. An avid early morning walker, chauffeur and doer of good deeds for neighbours and friends, Rose was renowned for her apple and strawberry-rhubarb crisps and self-deprecating humour, cryptoquote wizardry and crossword puzzle expertise. She was a lover of trains, her grand-dog (Snoozer), a food “sniffer”, and a Timmy’s regular. Rose knew every nook and cranny in Kings County, and always remained interested in, and had great recollection of, the lives of friends and relatives. The family gives grateful thanks to friends for the cards, flowers and visits during the time Rose was in hospital, as well as the excellent care. Donations may be made to the Kings Historical Society, (37 Cornwallis St, Kentville, B4N 2E2). Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Rose’s life will be held at Kings Riverside Court, Kentville from 2-4, April 23. Arrangements were made by Cara of the Halifax Regional Crematorium 902-462-6664.
