John Laureijs

John M. Laureijs DDS IMD DHS

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Dr. John Laureijs of Stellarton, Pictou County. John passed away suddenly on February 18, 2017, while out doing what he loved – ice fishing with one of his sons. Born in Antigonish on August 27, 1960, he was a son of the late Peter and Aldegonda (Vermeer) Laureijs of North Grant, Antigonish County. John will be greatly missed by his wife, Janice (Deyoung), and sons Richard, Steven and Peter (Tessa).
John’s dental career began in 1987 with Tridont Dental Centre in New Glasgow, a practice he established with long-time friend and colleague Alan MacIntosh after graduating from Dalhousie University. Tridont Dental Centre ultimately became Highland Dental Centre where he practiced for almost 30 years. John’s gentle and caring personality with nervous patients were a gift to the office. Although John enjoyed all facets of dentistry, he took a strong interest in the naturopathic side of dentistry and its relationship to overall health, taking many post graduate courses. John was recently recognized by the Board of Integrative Medicine and was given his Doctor of Integrative Medicine as well as his Doctor of Humanitarian Services.
John was a humble man. He loved hunting and fishing; he was an avid reader; and, in recent years, enjoyed travelling with his family, especially to Holland. He will be fondly remembered for his generosity, quiet counsel, wit and determination. John will be sadly missed.
He is survived by his mother, three brothers: Peter (Beth), Iowa; Arny (Diane), Dartmouth; and Corry (Robin), Summerside, P.E.I.; six sisters: Apollonia (Linda) Amherst; Catherine (Ron) MacGillivray, Maryvale; Jopy (Marvin) Haagsma, Edmonton; Mary Rose and Gonny Bernadette, North Grant; and Pauweliena, Yellowknife; father-in-law Francis Deyoung, New Glasgow; and many nieces and nephews.
His remains will rest at the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow for visiting from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m. Thursday from Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Stellarton with Father Barrett Clare-Johnson presiding. A reception will follow in the parish hall. Cremation will take place. Burial of ashes will take place in the parish cemetery at a later date.
Family flowers only. Donations in memory of John may be made to Tearmann House New Glasgow or to Summer Street Industries.
