Passed on: February 16th, 2017

Mary Margaret Fraser, 79, died peacefully on February 16, 2017 at the Cove Guest Home in Sydney, Nova Scotia, surrounded by her loving son and daughter-in-law. Mary was born on November 24, 1937 in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, the daughter of the late Michael Fraser of Benacadie and the late Elizabeth (McGean) Fraser of Ingonish. She attended St. John School in New Aberdeen and graduated from St. Michael’s Senior High. After graduating from Nova Scotia Normal College (Nova Scotia Teachers College), she began her career at St. Leo Catholic School in Calgary, Alberta. Returning home, Mary taught 33 years in Cape Breton. Her teaching career took her to St. Anthony’s School, St. John School, Bridgeport School, John Bernard Croak V.C. Memorial and St. Michael’s Junior High School. Mary enjoyed her teaching career immensely. The majority of her career was spent teaching students at St. John School (1977-1993) in New Aberdeen, a place and people that were very special to her. Being around family at her parent's home during the holidays were some of her favourite times. She was witty and had a dry sense of humour. Chatting with friends the late Pat Browner, Annie MacNeil and Liz Anne Roach for hours at a time was one of her favourite things to do. She loved reading and puzzle books. Cooking and baking for others was one of her favourite pastimes. Mom was a fantastic mother who was there for all the strikeouts, laps in the pool, skiing, snowmobiling and everything in between. I couldn’t have asked for a better or more supportive parent. Some of my fondest memories as a child were the long drives with her and my grandparents. She was my absolute rock and I will miss her terribly.
Mary is survived by her son, John (Rose); sisters, Elaine (Jude) Kelly, Anna Lee (Robert) Kazmel and Maurina (Sheldon) Canova; sister-in-law, Jane Anne White and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Theresa (Luc) Lacroix; niece, Michelle Lacroix and brothers, Edison and John. I would like to give a special thanks to the Cove Guest Home in Sydney for the wonderful care that they provided to my mother. I would also like to give special thanks to Dr. David Ley (Ann and Lynn) for the fantastic care and support over the years. Mom received excellent care from Dr. Laith Shimon, Dr. Don Brien, Dr. Paula Creighton, the staff at Glace Bay General Hospital, the staff at Cape Breton Regional Hospital and Parkland Estates. To her nieces, Melissa, Anna, Shauna Lee and Andrea Dawn, thank you for your special visits with mom. Special thanks to Darryl Kelly, Linda and David MacKay for always going the extra mile for mom. Your kindness and thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated.
Mom had a love for animals, especially dogs. She loved to play with and watch the antics of her pets, namely Boomer, Pokey, Molly and Sparky.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA on her behalf.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Curry’s Funeral Home, Glace Bay. As per her request, there will be no visitation or funeral. There will be a private burial to be held at a later date. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.currysfuneralhome.com.
