ROY, Cecil Eugene – It is with heavy hearts that the family of Cecil Eugene Roy, 85 of Yarmouth, announces his sudden passing on February 24, 2017 at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in Liverpool on April 18, 1931, Cecil was the son of the late Cecil Aubrey and Violet Elizabeth (Hamm) Roy. At the early age of 15 Cecil left school and home to work and support his mother and siblings. He worked as a laborer on the boats with the Mersey Paper Mill. In 1953 he enlisted as a Private in the Black Watch Battalion. He served in the Korean War. He was Honorably Released from the Army as L/CPL. He remained a member of the Black Watch of Canada Association. He later became a 3rd Class Engineer at CSF Barrington and ended his career as Commissionaire in Yarmouth. He was a proud Canadian who was a member of Cornwallis Historical Association, Canadian Merchant Navy Association, Lester B. Pearson Canadian International Peace Keeping Training Centre, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 61 [past President]. He spent his retirement years volunteering at the Lions Club and the Navy League of Canada. He took great pride in raising money for the Christmas Daddies for the past 19 years. One of his biggest accomplishments was the erection of the Korean War Memorial in Yarmouth where he was in charge of the Remembrance Day Services in Yarmouth. He also worked many years in the Poppy Campaign. He was a dedicated member of Salvation Army Yarmouth Community Church and was the Drum Major for the past 8 years. He was also known as the honorary Grandfather to the children of the Church. He enjoyed his summer months entering his antique cars in various shows and spending time at their cottage. He is survived and will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 29 years, Isabelle [Hemeon] Roy; children, Anthony, Vicki [Leonard] Stevens, Jimetta [Curtis] Stevens, Billy [Jane], Colin [Donna], and stepson, Billy McKetrick [Chris]; grandchildren, David, Tony, Brandi, Jeff, Paige, Kevin, Taylor, Laura, Leslie, Michael, Travis, Joey, and Anne; great grandchildren, Lexi, Avery, Griffin, Aubree, Candice, Reagan, Logan, Maddison, Logan, Darren, Tyler, Kaden, Lincoln, Landon and Drew; and sisters, Shirley Goodine, Margaret [Ed] Rice, Lillian [Brian] Cunningham; brothers, Harris [Sonny] Strachan, Walter [June] Strachan, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving son, Kevin and Lambert and brother Randy Strachan. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the Yarmouth Regional Hospital who helped in Cecil’s care and well being. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. Visitation was held on Monday, February 27th from 2-4 and again from 7-9 p.m. with a Legion Service at 7:30 p.m. A funeral service was held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the H.M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, Yarmouth, Capitan Mike and Melissa Mailman officiatied. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army.
