Norman Heggestad age 89 years of Frontier, Saskatchewan died at his home in Frontier on Friday, March 3, 2017. He was born at Climax, Saskatchewan on February 22, 1928 and received his education at Frontier. He started working at the family’s General Store at the age of 13 years, taking responsibility for stoking the fire before he went to school each morning. Norman was a true store keeper, taking over the family store from his father and partnering with his brother Omar. Norman continued to operate Heggestad’s General Store until his retirement in 2004. He was interested in farming and involved in every aspect of it. He loved the land and enjoyed watching the durum oceans with the waves created by a good brisk Saskatchewan wind. He married Irene Havervold on March 23, 1947. Norman was very community minded, serving as mayor and on village council for a total of 22 years. He also served on Frontier Credit Union Board, Frontier Board of Trade and the Hospital Board. Norman enjoyed curling and golfing.
He was predeceased by his father Ole in 1968, his mother Sonneva in 1990, daughter Norma Wingerak in 2003, great granddaughter Brinnly Wallis in 2010, sister Agnes Dash in 2007 as well as by numerous in-laws. He is survived by Irene, his wife of almost 70 years, son Valen Heggestad of Kamloops, B.C., grandson Cory Heggestad (Heather) and great grandchildren Jordan, Matthew, Rachelle, Graham and Julia, granddaughter Channa Lamarche (Steve) and great grandsons Broden and Deagen; Norma’s children: granddaughter Tera Angstadt (Scott), and great grandchildren Riley, Cole and Taya, grandson Kent Wingerak (Sara) and great grandchildren Shayla, Tyler, Rachel and Brooklyn and grandson Chad Wingerak (Viviane) and great grandsons Gabriel and Gerad; son Rande Heggestad of Frontier, granddaughter Randa Tomczak (Corey) and great grandchildren Finlay and Luca, Kirsten Wallis (Ryan) and great grandchildren Kinae, Madden, Blakely and Benson, granddaughter Cailee Farough (Doug) and grandson Dion Heggestad (Nikki) and great granddaughters Emlyn and Jaeda; daughter Sharleen Greenlay of Swift Current, Saskatchewan, and grandsons Byron Greenlay and Clayton Greenlay (Alli) and granddaughter Brianne Greenlay (Brian) and great granddaughter Rowyn; daughter Tanis Lonsdale of Frontier and grandsons Cody Lonsdale and Josh Lonsdale (Amanda) and great grandson Hudson; daughter-in-law Christine Heggestad of Frontier; two brothers Omar Heggestad of Medicine Hat, Alberta and Jerome Heggestad (Lynn) of Frontier as well as by numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws. Funeral Services were held from Bethel Lutheran Church in Frontier on Friday, March 10, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Brian Smith officiating. Randa Tomczak and Cailee Farough presented the eulogy. Interment took place at Bethel Lutheran Cemetery at Frontier. Binkley’s Funeral Service of Shaunavon (www.Binkleys.com) was in charge of the arrangements. Honorary Pallbearers were granddaughters Tera Angstadt, Channa Lamarche, Randa Tomczak, Kirsten Wallis, Cailee Farough and Brianne Greenlay. Pallbearers were grandsons Kent Wingerak, Chad Wingerak, Cory Heggestad, Dion Heggestad, Byron Greenlay, Clayton Greenlay, Cody Lonsdale, and Josh Lonsdale. Thank you for all the special care given to our Dad by Homecare: Teresa, Loretta, Lana, Mercy, Connie and Brittany and by EMS: Bonnie Doris, Carrie, Kim and all others who so kindly cared for our Dad so that he could stay in his home.
