McEACHERN, John Gerard “Gerry” – age 81, Elm Street, Yarmouth, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 16, 2017 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born January 12, 1936 in Sydney, NS, he was a son of the late John and Clara (MacKenzie) McEachern. Gerry was a graduate of Saint Francis-Xavier University in Antigonish, having celebrated 60 years as an alumnus in 2016. He devoted his life to health care, having worked as the CEO of the Yarmouth Regional Hospital for 36 years. Throughout those many years, he served on various committees and held many offices, including being a founding member of the National Board of Directors of the Canadian College of Health Executives and member of the American College of Hospital Administrators, having also served as Regional Director, Director-at-Large and Vice President of the Nova Scotia Association of Health Organizations. He was also a former director of Mental Health Nova Scotia, former director of the Victorian Order of Nurses and former member of both the Western Regional Commission on Drug Dependency and the Department of Health’s Administrators Advisory Committee. Gerry also served as a member of the local School Board, having held several positions. He was also a devoted 50-year member (2016) and Past President of the Yarmouth Rotary Club and Past President of the Yarmouth Golf and Country Club. In his spare time he enjoyed curling, photography and spending winters in Florida with his wife. Gerry leaves behind his loving wife, Marjorie E. (MacDonald) McEachern, as well as their children, John Peter “Jack” McEachern (Ina Amirault), Dartmouth; Margaret Claire “Marclaire” McEachern (Alan Martin), Largo, FL; Mary Catherine “Cathy” (Raymond “Ray”) Tynski, Yarmouth; Patricia Anne “Trish” McEachern (Darryl Jackson), Ottawa, as well as five grandchildren, Ryan Tynski, Adam Tynski, René Fitzgerald, Andrew Shaw and Sarah Martin. He is also survived by a sister, Mary (Gerry) Kelly and a brother, Charles (Glenda) McEachern, both of Halifax. Aside from his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Frank McEachern. Visitation took place from 7-9 p.m. Sunday, with prayers at 8 p.m. at H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. A funeral mass was celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 20 at Saint Ambrose Co-Cathedral, Yarmouth, Msgr. Gerald LeBlanc officiated. Inurnment will be held at Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery Columbarium in Yarmouth at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Yarmouth Hospital Foundation or to the Yarmouth Rotary Club.
