St. John's lost one of it's true sports heroes with the passing of Michael J. Squires, who died peacefully on Monday, March 20th, 2017, in the presence of his family, during his 73rd year. Mike was predeceased by his parents Michael and Alice Squires; his sisters Catherine and Stella; brothers William and Benjamin and his brother-in-law Edward. Leaving to mourn, his wife Isabel "Bel"; sister Alice (James); sons Michael (Katrina) and Donald; daughter Tina; grandchildren Michael, Robert, Matthew, Sara, Donald, Robyn, Kent, Miranda, Chris and Jeana; five great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons; brothers-in-law George, Dave (Lillian), Joseph and Kenny; sister-in-law Lorraine (Bill) and his special friend Harry; as well as many nieces, nephews and a close circle of other friends. Mike, the second oldest of six children, was born and raised in St. John's. He is most widely remembered for his philanthropic work in the 1970s, 80s and 90s. He was heavily invested in his Shamrock Athletic Association and his business interests and Centre Base Bingo which helped support many different charity organizations and various sporting groups; in turn, producing many championship teams at the local and provincial levels. He is especially remembered for his support of minor hockey and providing a game of hockey for many hundreds of players, young and old alike. He was inducted into the NL Amateur Hockey Association Hall of Fame in 2004. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home, 84 LeMarchant Road. Visitation on Wednesday, March 22nd from 5-9 p.m and Thursday, March 23rd from 12-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, March 24th, 2017 from the Basilica of St. John the Baptist with cremation to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mike's memory to The Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Clinic or a charity of one's choice.
