Gillespie, Cornelius Terrence (Terry)
1927-2017
It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Cornelius Terrence (Terry) Gillespie. He passed away on Thursday March 23, 2017 at the Sackville Memorial Hospital in Sackville, NB. He was 89.
Terry was born in Lewisville, NB on October 8, 1927 and grew up in Moncton. He received a BSc from St FX in 1951, and wore his X ring with pride. He graduated from Dalhousie Medical School in 1957. Following med school, he spent 5 years as a medical officer in the RCAF, where he met his wife, Rose, while stationed in Goose Bay, Labrador.
Terry dedicated his professional life to the treatment of Cystic Fibrosis in the Maritimes, serving as director of the IWK CF Clinic from 1966 until his retirement in 1992. In 2008 he received the Order of Canada in recognition of his work, and was recipient of a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.
Terry was perpetually curious and had a wide range of interests outside of medicine. Photography, genealogy, amateur radio, music and sailing were some of the hobbies he was able to resume enthusiastically upon retirement. He and fellow model-railroaders set up a model train display at the IWK which remains a favorite destination for patients, their families and visitors to the hospital.
Terry is survived by Rose (nee Kelly, from Kildalkey, Ireland) his wife of 58 years; son Sam; daughters Anne (Stephane Cloutier), Ethna (Zhiai Fu) and Mary (Ross Williams); his grandchildren Jeremy, Leila, Annika, Mara and Phaedra; his sister Mary (Larry) Peters and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Frank Gillespie (from Moncton) and Catherine (Savage) Gillespie (from Melrose, NB) and his brothers Don, Vincent, Bernie, Ray, Pat and Brian.
Terry’s family is grateful for the compassionate care he received while at the Sackville Memorial Hospital, and would like to thank the nurses and staff at the hospital, and his family physician Dr. Dysart.
