Harold SMITH

SMITH, Harold D.
Durham

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved father, Harold Douglas Smith, April 1, 2017 in Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow. Dad was born in Detroit, Michigan on Feb. 10, 1928, a son of the late Donald and Anna (Battye) Smith.
The family returned to Nova Scotia while Dad was still a young child. He grew up and attended school in Pictou County, and met and married the love of his life, Elva. They had 64 wonderful years together until her death in January 2016.
Dad worked various jobs before his employment at Ferguson Industries as the Personnel Manager, a position he held for 41 years until his retirement in 1992.
Dad was an active, dedicated member of the United Church in Pictou and later the West River Presbyterian, serving as Elder and on the Board of Managers.
He and Mom both enjoyed old time music and regularly attended the “Old Time Dances” every Saturday night. But it was his love of the outdoors where Dad spent many hours. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and loved overnighting at the “camps”, a passion he passed onto his son, son-in-law, grandsons and neighbour. He was a loving husband, a great father, brother, grandfather and friend. Dad was gentle, kind and always ready to lend a hand. He endured tremendous loss in 2016, first his wife in January and then his beloved daughter, Heather (Ken) in May, and finally his health. But he handled it all with dignity and strength.
Dad was also predeceased by his sisters, Patsy and Inez and brother, Ronald.
He will be sadly missed by his family, son, Richard (Patti) Calgary; daughter, Lynn (Gregor) Pictou, grandchildren, Sarah, Scott, Thomas, Eva Jessie and great-grandchildren, Eva and Colt; sister, Donna; sister-in-law, Marg; brothers-in-law, Waldo and Dennis; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral will take place 11 a.m. Wednesday from West River Presbyterian Church, Durham, with a reception to follow in the church hall. Burial will be at a later date in Seaview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the West River Presbyterian Church or the Glen Haven Manor.
