Archibald John MacPhee passed away on April 17, 2017, at the An Cala Palliative Care Unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Archie was born April 28. 1932 to the late Archie and Catherine (Gillis) MacPhee. Archie was a self-employed trucker, buying his first truck at the age of 18. He retired in August 1995 and went into gardening full time. He was a member of Sacred Heart - St. Margaret of Scotland Parishes; he was a founding member of Mira Pasture Co-Op, and a longtime member of Marion Bridge Fire Department.
Archie is survived by his wife of 57 years, Anna (Gillis); his five children and 12 grandchildren, Joanne (Angus MacQueen) and their children, Janel (Brad MacLean), Meaghan (Jeff Covey), all of Sydney, Catherine (Brian Nicholson), Florida and their children, Tyler (Christine), Simcoe, ON., Nathan, Florida, Sandra (Lawrence Alexander) and their children, Nicole (Devon Gallagher), Fiona, Stephanie, Matthew, all of Toronto, Laureen (Ron Cooper), Boston and their children, Danielle (Justin MacFarlane) Billerica, Mass., Andrea (Michael Greenwald) Arlington, Virginia, Vincent (Michele Lehmann) and their children, Allie and Brianna, all of Sydney. He was also the proud great-grandfather to Carter MacFarlane, Billerica, Mass.
Archie is survived by his sisters, Mary Gillis, Grand Mira, Theresa (Murray MacKinnon) , Halifax, Sadie (Dennis Kerr), Dartmouth; his brothers, Fr. Norman Glace Bay, Dannie (Liz) Sydney, John (Carole) French Rd., Stephen (Judy) Ottawa, Allan (Mary) Dartmouth.
Archie is also survived by Anna’s family, Rose (Howie Hasiuk), Leona Telfer, Halifax, Barbara (Bob MacLean), Sydney, Lloyd (Diane) Gillis, Burnaby. He was predeceased by a grandson in infancy, Christopher Nicholson; his brothers, Malcolm, Bonnie and Vincent; sisters, Sadie and Anne; brothers-in-law, Bernie (M.D.), Bernie (Rose) Sylvester Gillis, Everett Telfer, also sister-in-law, Mary MacPhee.
Archie will be waked on Wednesday April 19, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney.
Funeral mass will be held the following day, Thursday, at 11 a.m., at St. Margaret’s Church, Grand Mira South. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Palliative Care or Cancer Centre Patient Care Fund, both of the CBRH, or a charity of one’s choice.
