Agnes Isabel Mackenzie
December 19, 1921 – April 22, 2017
It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our mother Agnes MacKenzie on April 22, 2017.
Born Agnes MacDonald in 1921, she was the eldest daughter of Myrtle and Norman MacDonald from Hopewell and a proud descendent of Cape Breton’s infamous Giant MacAskill.
For most of her life, she called Glengarry her home, and spent her later years living in Sunny Brae with her daughter Sherry and son-in-law Philip until moving to the Valley View Villa.
A matriarch in the truest sense, she touched many lives with her kind and thoughtful nature whether it be through a card, a letter, a piece of homemade fudge, a phone call or story, or words of wisdom (including her favorite phrase ”one step at a time dear”).
She had a deep connection with the beauty of nature, and loved flowers, gardens, birds and animals. Our mother enjoyed the company of others, and her family was the most important thing to her. Wherever she was, she always kept connected with family and friends too, whatever the circumstances may be.
She will be missed greatly by family and friends, and is survived by her children Jerry MacKenzie, Ontario, Jackie MacKenzie (Lillian), Ontario; Lou MacKenzie, Truro; Marsha Hoffman (Dave), Truro; Tom MacKenzie (Bonnie), New Glasgow; Hal MacKenzie, Hamilton; Sherry MacLean (Philip), Sunny Brae; Sandy MacKenzie, Glengarry; Shane MacKenzie, Glengarry; Colleen Bell (Donnie), Bridgeville; Wendy Ward (Andy), Churchville; her sister Joyce MacNutt, Westville; 22 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and two great, great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her mother Myrtle, father Norman, brother Bud, and sister-in Law Tilly, brother-in-law Lindy MacNutt, husband Thomas and son Stephen “Stevie.”
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home Chapel with Bonnie Langille officiating. Burial will be in the Hopewell Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to the Hopewell Cemetery or the First Presbyterian Church, Hopewell.
