George William Swan

Passed on: May 6th, 2017

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, George William Swan, at age 89. He passed away in Shannex Nusing Home in Halifax on May 6, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Dad was born in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia in 1928, the son of Leonard and Viola Swan.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Earl, Arnold and Warren.
He is survived by his wife, Esther; his daughters, Dawn Woodman (Mark), Cheryl Chambers (Dave Harding) and Ellen MacLellan (Rick); his grandchildren, Jeffrey, Timothy (Dallas) and Michael (Ashley) Cross, Christopher (Tammy) and Shannon Ellis (Greg Erkvaara), Miranda and Mitchel MacLellan; great grandchildren, Kennedy, London, Ryleigh, Lark, Marley and Cohen, and his good friend, Phillip Murray. ‘He forgot our names but we remember his love.’
Dad spent the majority of his adult life in Cape Breton, where he was a local businessman and active member of the community. He owned and operated several small businesses, had political affiliations, and was a longtime member of the Kinsman Club. Dad enjoyed life to the fullest. He has touched the lives of many and will be remembered for his wit and his charm.
George requested that his body be donated to Dalhousie University for the advancement of science. An outdoor memorial celebration will be held on August 7, 2017 from 2-4 p.m. at 40 Birch Crescent, Georges River.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Sullivan’s Lane at Parkland for their care and kindness. A special thank you to daughter Dawn for her continuous love and devotion. ‘To the world she is but one person, but to our dad, she was his world’.
