Getting diagnosed with terminal brain cancer January 22, 2016 was a turning point in my life. To hear that news and how to deal with it was surreal; but then, in a matter of seconds, my faith kicked in and I knew I was going to be ok. Many things went through my mind in a short period of time and I soon realized I had an opportunity that many are not as fortunate to have. I can "get ready". I can also prepare to make sure that my beautiful wife, Kelly, is going to be ok without me and to lighten any burden I can from her. Writing this is one of them. There were other advantages, such as eating whatever I wanted without worrying about high cholesterol and blood pressure, and not having to wait long for appointments at the hospital, just to name a few. I was born at the Grace Hospital in St. John's, NL on October 21, 1961 and grew up in St. John's. My parents took us on many camping and fishing trips and gave us a love for the outdoors and animals that I carried with me my entire life. They also demonstrated what a happy and strong marriage was all about and I was so grateful to finally find the same when I met Kelly - I am thankful and happy to have spent the years we had together - I finally found my once in a lifetime love and best friend without end. In my professional life, I began my career in the NL Correctional Service as a Correctional Officer at H.M. Penitentiary in June 1981 and had achieved 32 years of service in corrections where I retired in May 2013 as the Assistant Superintendent of the Bishop's Falls Correctional Centre. During my career, I have worked at 6 of the provinces Correctional facilities including H.M. Penitentiary, St. John's City Lock Up, Salmonier Correctional Institution, Labrador Correctional Centre, NL Correctional Centre for Women and Bishop's Falls Correctional Centre. I am a second generation correctional officer following in the footsteps of my father. The family tradition continued as my brother Peter and nephew Stephen were also correctional officers in the NL correctional service. From our home in Conception Bay South, next to my loving wife and our 5 adored dogs, I peacefully went to be with the Lord on Wednesday morning of May 17, 2017. I am very thankful to have had Kelly take care of me as I wanted to be around my beloved dogs in our home and near our families during the end of my journey here on earth until I went to start my eternal life with Jesus. I have left behind my loyal and precious wife, Kelly (Rowsell) and our 5 treasured dogs, Jake, Fanny, Arsenal, Happy and Lilly; my parents Malachi and Linda Power; my father and mother-in-law Ron and Joyce Rowsell; sister-in-law Renee Watts (Ian); my siblings Geraldine Woolridge (Noel), Debbie Power (Barry), Francis Power (Darlene), Peter Power (Yolanda) and Sharon Power (Byron); many nephews, nieces and many other beloved family. Visitation at the James J. Hickey Memorial Funeral Home, Kelligrews on Thursday, May 18th from 7-9 pm and Friday, May 19th from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm.
