NEW GLASGOW – Helen Doreen Lawson, CD, 86, New Glasgow, passed away peacefully, Friday, May 19, 2017 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in Newton, Massachusetts, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Frank and Mary “Lucille” (Wright) Mollins.
Prior to retirement, Helen was employed as a Medical Transcriptionist and EKG Tech at the Aberdeen Hospital for 28 years. Following retirement, she and her late husband, Murray, moved to Prince Edward Island where they thoroughly enjoyed entertaining family and friends. They especially enjoyed playing cards and attending ceilidhs.
She was a member of First United Baptist Church, New Glasgow and Kingsboro Baptist Church, Kingsboro, P.E.I. Helen was very active in church life; teaching Mission Band, supplying cookies for Vacation Bible School, as a member of the Women’s Missionary Society and taking photos of church activities. She obtained the rank of Sergeant with The Nova Scotia Highlanders, A Company, New Glasgow and the Canadian Forces Decoration. Helen enjoyed square dancing and traveling. The last surviving member of her immediate family, she leaves an infectious smile and a legacy of faith and love.
Surviving are daughters, Winnie (Elmer) McCann, New Glasgow; Kathy (Herb) Mattatall, Hardwood Hill; son, Murray “Bud” Lawson, Westville; grandchildren, David (Anna) McCann, Krista (Chris) Avery, Jason (Amy) Lawson, Shannon (Steve) Scales, Ashley Mattatall, Heather Mattatall, Karen Mattatall (Jason Brown); great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Kate and Michael McCann, Jacob and Jersey Lawrence, Jayden Brown, Euan and Declan Lawson, Sam Scales; sisters-in-law, Joyce (Ralph) Sewell, Pembroke, N.B.; Carole Likely, Fredericton, N.B.; brothers-in-law, Willard Lawson, Grafton, N.B.; Philip (Margaret) Lawson, Skiff Lake, N.B.; Frank Lawson, Fredericton; Winston Lawson, Alberta; Lloyd (Wilma) Lawson, Grafton; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Murray Edward Lawson (2007); sister, Mary Greene (2013) and Winnie Ramsey (2003); brother, Rev. George Mollins (2017).
The family will receive visitors 2– 4 and 6 – 8 p.m. Tuesday in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in First United Baptist Church, New Glasgow with Rev. John Dunnett officiating.
Donations may be made in Helen’s memory to Diabetes Canada or Glen Haven Manor Recreation Fund.
