It is with great sadness that the family of Edward Stevenson, of Glace Bay, announce his passing on Friday, May 19, 2017 at Glace Bay General Hospital.
Ed was born on June 12, 1927 in Tower Road, Glace Bay. While growing up in Tower Road, Ed played numerous sports and also enjoyed fishing and other outside activities.
Ed was a member of the Canadian Army from December 1944 through September 1945. Shortly after completing his military service, Ed moved to New York City, where he pursued boxing. Ed competed in the 1948 New York City Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament.
Ed returned to Glace Bay in 1954 to marry Jean (Sinclair) Stevenson. Ed and Jean eventually settled in Connecticut, where they built a home and raised a family. In his earlier years in Connecticut, Ed worked as a roofer, a grocery store manager and a construction worker. His primary job during his time in Connecticut was as an ice rink manager and the director of youth hockey programs. Ed was well known and recognized as a successful high school hockey coach.
Ed and Jean returned to Glace Bay in 1986 and settled into Jean’s childhood home on Brookland Street. Ed continued his hockey coaching career in Glace Bay, joining the staff of the Cape Breton University Capers. Ed loved spending time in the country. He and Jean often took day trips out to the Mira area and spent many overnights in the Margarees, were they would sight see, picnic, and often wet a line.
Ed was very proud of his Scottish heritage. One of his fondest memories was a retirement trip he and Jean took to Scotland, where they traced their family roots while visiting Dunfermline, Glasgow, Ayrshire, and the Hebrides.
Ed was a country music fan and also loved bagpipe music. His favorite country musician was Hank Williams Sr. and his favorite song was The Flower of Scotland.
Ed is survived by his wife, Jean (Sinclair) Stevenson; his son, Ed (Heather); his daughter, Heather (Paul) Alaverdy; grandchildren, Kyle Alaverdy, Mathew Alaverdy, Kyla and Fiona; brother, Tom (Rosella); sister, Ann Linton (Jim Long), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ed was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Ann McDougall (Howie) Stevenson; his two infant brothers, including his twin, and his older brother, John, who was killed in action during WW II.
There will be no visitation as per Ed’s wishes. A service will be held on Tuesday, May 23 at 2 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home and Chapel.
