JOHN ANTONY EDWIN GILLAN

GILLAN, JOHN ANTONY EDWIN - John Gillan, loving husband of Alison (Jope), after a short illness passed away peacefully at home, in Gunnislake, Cornwall, England on November 18th, 2004. John was born in England in 1945 returning to Bermuda in 1947 where he was raised. He attended Mt. Allison and the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. He always had a love for Canada and looked forward to retiring to Westfield near his grandchildren Victoria, Jonathan and Jason. John enjoyed daylong walks on Dartmoor with Alison. He played a high level of Rugby over a 45 year span with The Bermuda Athletic Association, Plymouth Jesters and finished the 2004 season and his 1300th game, as an aggressive prop forward, with the O.P.M. Nomads of Plymouth England. A life long educator; John enjoyed his most recent role at Dutchy College; prior to that he had many roles the South West Electrical Board, following University he was a teacher private schools in Bermuda. He is survived by his wife Alison and daughters Jenna (Tim Edney) and Tamsyn who reside in England; son Mark (Mariann), their children Victoria, Jonathan and Jason of Westfield; parents Ron and Joan and sister Jennifer (Michael Meacham) and their daughters Christie and Kim (Jeremy Gibson) of Paget Bermuda. A funeral service will be held at the Tamar Valley Methodist Church, England on November 29th with family gatherings held following, to scatter ashes at Fir Tor on Dartmoor, as well as in Bermuda and Westfield. Remembrances may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of the donor's choice.
