Morrison, Helen Dean (née MacLanders) – Mary Dean and Charlie (Chuck) are saddened by the passing of their mother Helen Dean (MacLanders) Morrison in Streetsville, Ontario, on October 4, 2008. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Dr. N. Alastair Morrison in 1999. She is survived by her two children, Mary Dean Morrison and J. Charles Morrison (Lil), her grandchildren Andrew Morrison Eng, Emily Morrison Eng and Alastair Morrison Eng, her step grandchildren Craig Popham and Corey Morrison (Denise) and her step great grandchildren Davin Allan Morrison and Cassidy Jordon Morrison. Helen was born in Brule Shore, Pictou County, Nova Scotia on July 4, 1915, the only child of James L. MacLanders and Mary Ann Gunn. She spent her early childhood in Brule, a year in Trail, BC, and the remainder of her schooling was in Pictou where her parents farmed and her father was the Chief of Police. She graduated from Pictou Academy and then undertook nursing training at the Toronto General Hospital where she earned her RN in 1939 and where she was among the first nurses in Canada to be trained in the use of heparin. During World War II, she nursed at the Camp Hill Military Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she met Lt. Dr. Al Morrison. They were married on April 10, 1943 after which she endured 2 1/2 long years of separation as Al went overseas with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. They were reunited on New Year’s Eve 1945, after which they moved to Musquodoboit Harbour where Al became the local country doctor. After he completed a degree in Public Health from the University of Toronto, she again accompanied Al to Truro in 1958 where they spent the next 20 years. While in Truro, Helen taught piano to a select group of beginner pianists. In the late 1970s, they moved to Toronto to be with Mary Dean and their grandchildren. Helen was a loving and caring wife and mother, a devout Christian who cared for others, a fabulous cook, a doting grandmother. We wish her well on her new journey. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to World Vision Canada.
