J. Gilbert Reid, 88, Merigomish, Pictou County passed away on Saturday, April 5, 2008 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born on August 29, 1919, he was the second son of one of six children born to William and Bertha (Cameron) Reid of Sutherland’s River. Gilbert attended Sutherland’s River one-room school. While growing up on the farm, he worked with his father who bought cattle, butchered and sold meat on both a wholesale and retail basis. After Gilbert grew up, he operated his own trucking business which involved the sale of meat, fish, fire wood, and farm produce which he sold to customers in both Pictou and Antigonish Counties. On August 31, 1949, he was married to Hazel Cameron from Heathbell, Pictou Co. After their marriage they bought a home in Plymouth Park where they lived for 27 years. For a period of 14 summers, from 1974-1987, Gilbert and owned and operated their campground called Merry-Go-Park located in Merigomish. In 1978 they sold their home in Plymouth Park and lived in Merigomish where, a few later, in 1983 they built a new home and continued to live there. Gilbert always enjoyed the out-of-doors, the woods, gardening, and doing a bit of landscaping work on his property in Merigomish. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Hazel Cameron; a son Robert (Kathy), Merigomish; grandson Philip (Carli Dunbar), Merigomish/Shubenacadie; sisters, Hazel Thomson and Verna Reid, both of Haven Brook Manor in Riverton; brother Cecil (Fran), Hampton, N.B.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his son John William in infancy; brother Sim, a sister Margaret in infancy; as well as aunts, uncles, and cousins. Visitations will be held 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday from Eagles Funeral Home, Westville. His funeral service will be held 2 o’clock Wednesday from Freedom Bible Church, Sutherland’s River with Pastor Alan Klein officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, New Glasgow.
