SPRINGVILLE - Donald Mervin Fielding Smith, passed away September 9, 2007. Born June 17, 1923 on Nelson Street, New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Fielding and Anne Freda (Naugler) Smith. Donald was a WWII veteran serving overseas in the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry, where he wed his bride, Irma Carolina Cosyn in 1945. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Branch #75 Legion, Eureka. He was employed most of his post war years at Trenton Works, where he held numerous unionized positions in the United Steel Workers Local #1231. His love of music was well known having been for 30 years a member and then the director of the Stellarton Male Choir, a member of the Barber Shoppers and also a member of the Legion Choir. He was an adherent of the Springville Presbyterian Church where he was a choir member and served on the Board of Managers. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, New Glasgow. He is survived by his wife, Irma Carolina Cosyn; sisters: Freda (Glenn) Cowan, Riverview, N.B.; Audrey (late Kenneth) Cann, Dartmouth; Vera (late Gerald) MacDonald, Pictou; Crystal (John) Emerson, Moncton, N.B.; brothers, Fred (Bonnie), Plymouth; Harold (Sibble) Pictou; daughters: Annie (Barrie) Corbin, Berwick; Nancy (Rob) MacNutt, Springville; Arlene (Robert) MacMillan, New Glasgow; sons: Fielding (Roberta), Springville; Marshall (Jo-Anne) Springville; Mervin (Charlene) Westville; Freddie (Debbie), Springville; Kenneth, Edmonton; grandchildren: Bobby Smith, Tanya Corbin, Kenda Smith, Jennifer Conway, Angela Cruickshank, Charmaine Smith, Matthew MacNutt, Leading Seaman Matthew Chabassol, Matthew Smith, Private Colin Chabassol; Jeffrey Chabassol; Kayla Smith, Kelsey Smith; great-grandchildren: Taylor Dawn Conway, Emmett Logan Francis, Fielding Colby Pellerine. The family will receive visitors from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the Springville Presbyterian Church with Rev. Donald Shephard assisted by Rev. Gary Tonks officiating. Burial will be in the Springville Cemetery. Donations in memory of Donald may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Fund, the Springville Presbyterian Church Building Fund or to a charity of one's choice.
