TRENTON – Duncan Roderick MacGillivray, age 94, of Trenton and formerly of Florida, passed away Wednesday, January 14, 2009, in Trenton. Born in Antigonish, he was a son of the late Daniel Andrew and Mary (MacNeil) MacGillivray. His family moved to New Glasgow in 1929 and he worked at the Norfolk Hotel. He was a roofer by trade and moved to Yonkers, New York, in 1937. He was a Canadian working in the USA when he answered the call to serve the US Army from Nov. 6, 1941, to Oct. 19, 1944. He was a Sergeant Technician 5th Grade serving with Battery “F” 36th Field Artillery overseas in the Tunisian, Sicilian and Italian Campaigns. He was decorated with the Silver Star for his gallantry in action. The citation for the medal also reads that his devotion to duty, his courage and coolness under fire, served as a shining example to his fellow soldiers. This medal also brought honour to his hometown (New Glasgow) as well as to himself and family. After retiring, he moved from New York to Hollywood, Florida, where he worked in security. He spent his summers in Pictou Co. and was an avid sports fan. He is survived by a sister, Theresa Fraser, Trenton; nieces: Patricia (Don) Hussher, Trenton; Florence (Wilfred) Rector, Fort Saint John, BC; Carolyn White, Stellarton; Marlene (Ray) Raniere, Moncton; Margaret Langille, Ont.; nephews: Harry Fraser, Doug Fraser, Trenton; Gary (Janet) Fraser, Scotsburn; Don (Heather) Brooks, Ottawa; aunt, Florence Chisholm, Pictou; and many grandnieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Josephine Labertrandie; son, Daniel Roderick; sisters: Margaret Labertrandie, Marion MacGillivray, Mary Brooks, Florence Weeks; brother, Andrew. Cremation has taken place. No visitation or funeral service by request. A graveside committal service will be held in Christ the King Cemetery at a later date.
