Date de naissance : 28 février 1921

Date de décès : 22 juillet 2008

GARDEN OF EDEN – On July 22, Dad passed away in the Garden of Eden, Pictou County. How difficult it is to sum up 87 years of life in a few lines. Dad was a good, hardworking man. To some he may have appeared a bit gruff and impatient but inside was a teddy bear. He rarely said no when someone needed help. Many nights he would turn out to help people stuck in ditches, those who were lost and those needing a drive home. Dad was born February 28, 1921, in Durham, Pictou County, the son of the late Marguerite MacKenzie, Durham, and Harry Johnson, Stellarton. At five years of age he was adopted by the late Gordon and Carrie Munro, Sundridge and Broadway. In July 1939, he joined the Pictou Highlanders and was proud to have been a “West Novie”. He served in Bermuda, overseas, and saw action in Italy and was part of the liberation of Holland. Upon his return home, he worked in lumber mills and camps, quite often for Thompson Brothers. He met Margaret Cameron, a cook, in Garden of Eden and they were married on March 31, 1949. Dad worked hard to support his family by working at road construction for Tidewater and Nova Construction. He was a member of the crew who did the first paving of the Cabot Trail. Wanting to be closer to home, he later purchased a Tree Farmer and became self-employed. For “ retirement”, he worked on his twenty acres of Christmas Trees. Active in the community, Dad was a member of the Zion Presbyterian Church, East River St. Mary’s, serving as an elder, Treasurer and was on the Board of Managers. He was active in the East River St. Mary’s Fire Department and organized the Thursday night card games at the Fire Hall for many years. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 34. He is survived by his wife Margaret, Valley View Villa, Riverton; his two children: daughter, Anne Munro, Willowdale; and son, Allison Munro (Ann), Garden of Eden; grandchildren, Steven, Halifax; and Jillian (Jeff Flower), Ontario. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a granddaughter, Laura Elaine Munro. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, July 23, at the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow, and in Zion Presbyterian Church, East River St. Mary’s, from 1 to 2 p.m., Thursday, July 24, with the funeral service following at 2. Burial will be in the Valley View Cemetery. Each November 11, Dad always attended the Remembrance Day Service at the Cenotaph in Thorburn. To honor his memory, we request that you go to a Cenotaph and attend a Remembrance Day Service. “In the Rising of the sun and in its going down, we remember them…. So long as we live, they too shall live, for they are now a part of us, as we remember them. – Prayer of Remembrance. Donations may be made to the East River St. Mary’s Fire Department, Aberdeen Palliative Care Society, Thorburn Cenotaph or a charity of your choice.
