Elizabeth "Betty" Mills - 86, Truro. The death of Elizabeth "Betty" Mills occurred Monday, October 27, 2008, at home surrounded by her loving family. Born October 4, 1922, in New Glasgow, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Sarah (Robertson) Chisholm. She received her early education in New Glasgow and when she and her family moved to Truro, she attended the Provincial Normal College. She taught for six years in Colchester County and met and married Herbert Mills, who was also a teacher. They lived in Stellarton, Westville and Tatamagouche before moving to Truro where they lived for 46 years. During these years, the work of raising her three sons and daughter was her great pleasure and joy. Throughout her life she was an active member of the United Church and took part in many church activities. Upon moving to Truro, she developed her interest in painting and enjoyed this creative hobby as long as she lived. She was a charter member of The Attic painters and also of the Truro Art Society. She was also instrumental in establishing the Head Start Program in Truro in the 1960s. When her husband retired, they spent many happy times attending Elder hostel programs and travelling. She loved reading and extended her love of books to all her children, and through them, to her grandchildren. Betty is survived by her sons, Frank (Patricia), Truro; Joe (Kathy), Dartmouth; Rob (Kelly), Peterborough, Ontario; daughter, Sari (Bob) Minichiello, Ketch Harbour; eight grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert; brother, Donald Chisholm. Special thanks are extended to Colchester Palliative care unit, Colchester VON, Earth Angels and to Frank and Patricia whose care over many years allowed Betty to remain at home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Betty's family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, October 29, 2008. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday in Brunswick Street United Church, 250 Brunswick Street, Reverend David Lutes officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. Interment will be held in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens, Alma, Pictou County. If so desired, donations in Betty's memory to Colchester Palliative Care Unit, Colchester VON or the Truro Ostomy Society are welcomed.
