Elizabeth Anne (Betty) Mclean

McLEAN, Elizabeth Anne (Betty) 84, of Island East River, Pictou County, passed away January 2nd, 2009, in QE11 Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in Eureka, she was the daughter of William S. and Catherine (Fraser) McLean. She was a graduate of the New Glasgow High School, and before starting her training at the Ottawa Civic Hospital School of Nursing she was employed at the Unemployment Insurance Commission in New Glasgow. After graduating as a nurse in 1948, and receiving her R.N. she continued working at the Ottawa Civic Hospital for a number of years after which she returned to Nova Scotia and was on the staff of the Camp Hill Veteran’s Hospital and the Abbie Lane Hospital. Upon her retirement in 1985 she returned to her home community of Island East River, was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hopewell, a former member of the Springville-Island Women’s Institute, and a long time dedicated and loyal member and volunteer of the East Pictou Unit of the N.S. Division, Canadian Cancer Society. Family, immediate and extended, and her friends, meant a great deal to her. She was a special Aunt Betty to her nieces and nephews, and they and their families were her pride and pleasure. She is survived by her sister, Willene Walker, Summerside, P.E.I., her children; Andrew, Bill, Anne, Alex, and Ernest, and her brothers; John (Ellen) Eureka, their children Elspeth, Neil and Malcolm, and George (Delthia), Stellarton, and their children; Susan, John, Shelley, Sherri, David and Paul. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother-in-law, Kenneth Walker, and niece Karen McLean and nephew Peter McLean. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday in the H. C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton, funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday in First Presbyterian Church, Hopewell, with Rev. Gary Tonks officiating. Burial in Riverton Cemetery at a later date. Family flowers only. Donations in memory may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Hopewell or the Canadian Cancer Society.
