PICTOU/PICTOU ISLAND – Elroy Dunn MacCallum “Red Dunn”, 62, Pictou and Pictou Island. It is with a heavy heart that Rose announces the final ’sail’ into peace and glory of her loving husband, Dunn, on June 18, 2008, at the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Regional Hospital, New Glasgow, surrounded by his loving friends and family following a three year battle with cancer, fought with a positive outlook, good grace and strength, inspiring those who loved and cared for him with his generous and considerate ways in difficult times. Born in Pictou on November 7, 1945, the son of Arthur Roy and Catherine (MacDonald) MacCallum, he lived much of his life on Pictou Island. Leaving school at age 13, he began his working life at McGees’ Pea Factory in Pictou where he used to tell of having to stand on a bench to reach the assembly line. He worked at SeaBrook Farms in PEI and fished scallops in New Brunswick with the late Irving Dwyer. He was a former employee with the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation on Pictou Island. He made life-long friends wherever he went. Dunn became self employed in 1976 when he acquired a lobster gear and fished off east end Pictou Island until last year when he retired due to ill health. Learning carpentry from his father he loved woodworking, creating not only functional projects but also hobby horses and gifts for his friends and family. Surviving are his wife of almost 38 years, Rose (Fraser); brother, Sterling (Linda), Vermilion, Alberta; sisters, Diane (Stanley) Chaisson, Central Caribou; Ardith Langille, Pictou; sister-in-law, Mary MacCallum, Division Road, Pictou; and he was a special papa to Kalli Anne MacCallum, Cardigan, PEI. Besides his parents he was predeceased by sister Muriel, and two nephews, Drew MacCallum and Lloyd ‘Pook’ MacCallum. An affiliate member of Branch 16, Royal Canadian Legion, Pictou, he was an avid member of the Wednesday Night Legion Dart League, and also a member of the Pictou Island Dart League. His remains are resting at the McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou with visitation on Monday, June 23 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 -9:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 24, at the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Pictou at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Alan Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Seaview Cemetery. Family Flowers only please. Donations in his memory may be made to the Palliative Care Unit or Oncology Unit of the Aberdeen Regional Hospital, or a charity of choice.
