CLOWATER, L. MEARL The death of L. Mearl Clowater occurred at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital, Fredericton, NB on Thursday, March 20, 2003 at the age of 85. Born in Doaktown, he was a son of the late Charles and Annie (Lyons) Clowater-Thomas. He was a member of the Nashwaaksis United Church, the Masonic Lodge Alexander #33, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4, Fredericton, a Lifetime member and Past President of the Nashwaaksis Lions Club, where he took an active interest in all the clubs activities, the Nelson Hollow Salmon Association and past member of the L.O.L. Lodge #36. Mr. Clowater enjoyed hunting, and camping for many years at Nelson Hollow, spending much of his time fishing the Miramichi River, tying his special "Secret flys", playing horse shoe games and telling fishing stories with all his good friends at the firepit at night. He served overseas from 19421946, he was a trucker at Camp Gagetown for many years and later years working in CFB and also a School Bus Driver. Survived by his wife of 61 years, Julia (Wilkins); two sons, James "Jim" (Dianne) of Carlisle Road and Ronald (Joyce) of Royal Road; two daughters, Shirley Buchanan (Terry) of Tay Creek and Joyce Jeffers & Companion Wayne Jones of Wuhrs Beach, Minto; 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild; two sisters, Vilda Amos of Doaktown and Norma McKay of Nashwaaksis; three special sisters-in-law, Hilda Pellerine of Halifax, Greta Thomas of Royal Road and Jean Agnew of Marysville; two step brothers, Eldon and Clarence Thomas of Ontario; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by step-father, James Thomas; step-brothers, Russell, John, James, Roy and Elwood. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton North on Friday from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4, Fredericton will hold a tribute service on Friday evening at 7 pm. The Nashwaaksis Lions Club will hold a tribute service on Friday evening at 7:15 pm. The Funeral Service will be held from the York Funeral Home's T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel, Fredericton on Saturday, March 22, 2003 at 3 pm with Rev. Gil MacKenzie officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in the Douglas Rural Cemetery, Fredericton, NB. Pallbearers for the service are: Garfield Wilkins, Fenton Doak, Harry Nicholls, Claire Hawkins, Terry McNeill and Charlie Bowlen. For those who wish, remembrances to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick would be appreciated by the family.
