DR. IVAN H. "BILL" CROWELL
CROWELL, DR. IVAN H. "BILL" It is with sadness that we announce the death of Dr. Ivan H. "Bill" Crowell, which occurred at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital on May 24, 2003. He was born in Caledonia, NS in 1904. Dr. Crowell was a great philanthropist. He attended and also taught at many different universities which included teaching biology at McGill University for ten years. He was recruited from McGill to help establish the NB Craft School and was instrumental in having Kings Landing established when he learned of the construction of the Mactaquac Dam. Dr. Crowell received degrees from Harvard (on full scholarship), U.N.B. and Miami universities. He is believed to be the first pewtersmith in Canada and trained people in Canada and the United States in this art. After retiring from pewtersmithing, he wove tapestries for the University of New Brunswick, Dalhousie University, Kings College, Smythe Street Cathedral, City of Fredericton, Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, Kings Landing, Lieutenant Governor's Mansion and many more. He took great delight in turning childrens' drawings into tapestries, of which there are many throughout the city. Among the many distinctions bestowed upon Dr. Crowell are the Order of Canada, Distinguished Citizen's Award, Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal, honourary degrees from U.N.B. and most recently, the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal. Survived by great niece Hope Maston and Hope's daughters, Amanda and Melanie Thibodeau and Melanie's son, Tyler; very special friend and confidante, Shawna Hazlett; devoted friends Gertrude Duffie, Marg Bannister, Darlene Hazlett, Marilyn Lohnes and Mel McGuigan along with his Windsor Court "family." Predeceased by his wife and soul mate, Mildred (Thomas) Crowell; parents John and Ella (Frizzell) Crowell; two brothers and one sister; his first wife, Olive and their young son, Ivan ("Billy"). There will be no visitation by request. A memorial service to celebrate "Bill's" long and distinguished life will be held at the Christ Church Parish Church on Thursday, June 5 at 2:00 pm. Archdeacon John Sharpe officiating. Reception to follow. Honourary pallbearers will be Gertrude Duffie, Mel McGuigan, Bev Hazlett, Alida Visbach, Dave Wilson and Dr. John McLaughlin. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Chalmers Hospital Foundation or to the Fredericton Community Foundation.
