WILBY, THOMAS R. (D.F.C.) The passing of Thomas Richard Wilby D.F.C. of Fredericton occurred at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital on Tuesday, July 8, 2003. He was 84. Born on Friday, the 13th of June, 1919 in Richmond Virginia, he was the son of the late Elizabeth (Bessie) Ramey and Joseph Wilby. He graduated from St. Thomas University in Chatham, NB. A lifelong resident of Fredericton and a self-employed businessman, he owned and operated the Imperial Restaurant on Carleton Street in Fredericton for over 30 years. A man of deep spiritual commitment, he was a faithful member of St. Dunstan's Roman Catholic Church. Thomas was a Life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, a life member of the Elk's Club, the Air Force Club and the Fredericton City Club. A veteran of WWII, he enlisted in the Royal Air Force in 1940 and was shot down over occupied France in December 1942 and became a Prisoner of War. He escaped imprisonment and returned to England in June 1943. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by His Majesty, King George the sixth. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 61 years, Delice (DeWolf), a War bride and fellow soldier. He was a faithful father to his seven children (six boys and one girl); Christopher, Thomas (Linda), Edward (Helen), Joseph (Barbara), Danny (Connie), Anna Marie and Louis (Gisele); proud grandfather of eighteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two special sisters, Rosie DeLong and Isabelle Wilby and two special children, Don Ouellette and Helen Wilby; seven nieces and five nephews. He was predeceased by his two older brothers, Emerson and Edward. He will be missed, fondly remembered and forever loved. Resting at Bishop's Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road, Fredericton, Wednesday evening from 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held from St. Dunstan's Roman Catholic Church on Thursday, July 10, 2003 at 10:00 AM with Msgr. Brian Sheehan officiating.
