Herman Ralph MacKeen, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on December 25, 2007, in Sackville, N.S., where he had lived for the past 20 years. Born in Aspen, Guysborough County, on April 26, 1927, Herman was the son of Forrest and Edna (Manson) MacKeen. He is survived by his wife, Hazel (Cameron); daughter, Kathy (Mike) Blackmore; son, Darrin (Joel) MacKeen; granddaughters, Allyson and Jan Blackmore; sisters, Alice Sutherland, Denver, and Greta Greenwood, Cole Harbour. He was predeceased by son, Ralph, sisters, Elsie Ross and Elda MacKeen, and brothers, Scott and Wilbur. Herman received his formal education at the University of Moncton and St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish. He retired after a long career as a teacher at CRVS in Port Hawkesbury. Herman’s lifelong passion was his music. He was a member of the St. Mary’s Men’s Choir, Sherbrooke; an elder at Kirk Memorial United Church, Glenelg; Sherbrooke Oldtimers, Lions Club Sherbrooke, Downhome Fiddlers, Hants Community Choir, and most recently the Last Chance Band. Thanks to all his family and friends who visited, sent cards and called, and also to the palliative team, Community Health, VON, Dr. Fox and Joan. Family flowers only, donations in his memory can be made to Children’s Wish Foundation. Cremation at his request. Arrangements under H.W. Angus Funeral Homes, New Glasgow. Visitation at Kirk Memorial United Church in Glenelg, Thursday, December 27, from 6 to 9 p.m. Funeral Friday December 28, at Kirk Memorial Church at 2 p.m. with Reverend Derek Elsworth officiating, interment to follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in East River St. Mary’s. A memorial service will also be held at East Gore United Church in Hants County on Saturday December 29 at 3pm, with Reverend Chuck Patterson officiating.
