Isabel Elsie Mackean

PICTOU – Isabel Elsie MacKean, 87, of the Maritime Oddfellows Home, Pictou, formerly of Acadia Ave., Stellarton, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family. Born in Millsville, Pictou Co., she was the daughter of the late Garnet and Elsie (Young) MacKay. Isabel was a resident of Stellarton since 1947, having moved to the Maritime Oddfellows Home in February 2002. She was a registered nurse having trained at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, and worked there for a number of years, as well as in Toronto. She was a very active member of Sharon St. John United Church, Stellarton, and was a life member of the U.C.W. Isabel was also a charter member of O.E.S., Harmony Chapter #25, Stellarton. She was presented with her 60 year jewel by Worthy Patron Charles McPherson and Worthy Matron Agnes MacDonald in January of 2008. Isabel was the last surviving member of her family. She is survived by her son, Gerald Roger MacKean, Stellarton; daughters, Brenda (Charles) MacKean-Barss, Wolfville; and Barbara (Edward) MacCallum, Stellarton; grandchildren, Mark (Karrie) and Erin; great-grandchildren, Reade, Cameron, Max and Jack. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald Hayman MacKean; step-mother, Georgie Ann (MacKay) MacKay, brothers, Dawn and Raymond MacKay; and sister, Loudelle Hargrave. Isabel will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She will be remembered for her love, her family and home. The family will cherish her numerous pieces of needlework and paintings which she enjoyed doing. The past few years she endured her failing health with grace and was always delighted when friends came to visit. The family will receive visitors from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 28th, 2008 in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 29th, 2008 from Sharon St. John United Church, with Rev. John Roy and Rev. Mary MacDermid officiating. Burial will be in the Brookside Cemetery at a later date. Family flowers only please. Donations in memory of Isabel may be made to the Maritime Oddfellows Home or to a charity of one’s choice. The family wishes to extend a very special thanks to the staff of the Maritime Oddfellows Home, for their love and care.
