LOURDES – Jean Agnes (DeWolfe)?Mahoney, of 15 Saint Bernard Street, Lourdes, has left us to “prowl the fields on fairy feet,” hopefully with a little black dog at her side, in her beloved Merigomish, the place of her birth, that has always held a huge place in her heart. She passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2008, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. The daughter of Malcolm and Gertrude (Keating) DeWolfe, Jean was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Jean was a graduate of Maritime Business College, and in her working years, she was employed as a stenographer. She spent the war years living and working in Halifax, and resided, for the most part, at the YWCA. It was there that many life-long friendships were formed. Jean was a great correspondent, and there were many people, throughout the continent and beyond, who looked forward to her next letter. Her written words of wisdom are treasured by many, to this day. After her marriage, in 1949, to John Mahoney, Jean remained at home to raise her family, with the exception of a few years employment with Eastern Transport Ltd., in the early ‘70s. Her family was most important to her. “My wealth was my family, I had no need of anything more.” Besides her husband, John, in 1972, Jean was predeceased by her brothers: Syl, Don, Reg and Bob. The family surviving her, of whom she was so proud, include her daughters, Trudy (Donnie) Grant, Plymouth, Sheila (Harvey) Stiles, Abercrombie, and their daughters, Rebecca, Lauren and Morgann; son, Brian (Ginny) Mahoney, Lourdes, and their children: Vincent, Erin, Jessica and Bradley; several nephews and nieces, including special niece, Linda (Hugh) Thompson, St. Paul’s, whose many visits brought so much enjoyment. Jean also had many good friends who brought much joy to her life, especially childhood friends, Becky Rawluk, Langley, B.C., the sister Jean never had. The family would like to extend special thanks to daughter-in-law, Ginny, whose excellent personal care skills enabled Jean to remain at home. Donations in Jean’s memory may be made to the Pictou County Branch of the SPCA. “Now scatter your kindness wherever you can. It will make life worthwhile, and the joys will be returned to you a hundredfold.” Arrangements are under the direction of the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or service by Jean’s request. A private family burial will take place at a later date in Riverview Cemetery, Merigomish. Home at last!
