John Edward Smith, age 50 of Beaver Bank, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family following a courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma on May 1, 2007. Born in New Glasgow, Pictou County he was the son of Margaret (Weir) Smith of New Glasgow, and the late, Edward "Bud" Smith. John left home at the age 18 to work for CNR for 13 years, also Fairview Industries, and then Marsh Engineering, now owned by Canadian Maritime Engineering. John was well known for his love of work and to build with steel. In his earlier years he loved to race his #55 car, at Riverside Speed Way and Scotia Speed World. He loved four wheeling whether in his truck or on his ATV. He was an avid race fan of Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr. John was also an avid Maple Leafs fan but also a loyal fan of Sidney Crosby. In his spare time you would always find John in his garage working on a project, whether it be for himself or a favour for a friend. John was most proud of his family, he leaves behind his loving wife of 29 years, Dianne (Anderson); two daughters, Paula (Allan) d'Eon of West Pubnico, Yarmouth, Melissa (Dale) Bedard of Red Deer, AB.; five grandchildren: Emma, Chole, Jacob, Parker and Cody who were his pride and joy; brother, Scott (Phyllis) Smith of New Glasgow; sisters, Nancy (Kenny) Jardine of Union Centre, Sherry (Robert) Anderson of Little Harbour, Susan (Sheldon) Langille of Fraser's Mountain; many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by grandparents: Jack and Annie Weir, John Hugh and Ethel Smith. Visitation 7-9 today, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Drive. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, First Sackville Presbyterian Church, Beaver Bank Road, Rev. Dr. L. George MacDonald officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. Burial to take place in Brookside Cemetery, New Glasgow at a later date. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to International Myeloma Foundation.
