CHARLENE FRANCES (GRANT) CHALMERS

CHALMERS, CHARLENE FRANCES (GRANT) Charlene passed away on Wednesday at home in Winnipeg at the age of 54 after a battle with cancer. Besides her husband of 33 years, Bill, she is survived by two daughters, Juanita Gourley (Kevin) of New Brunswick and Melanie Chalmers (Kieran) of Ontario; a son, Perry (Nancy) of New Brunswick; four grandchildren, William, Emily, Nathan and Ryan all in New Brunswick. She also leaves to mourn her passing, brothers, Marvin Grant (Jacqui), Donald Grant; sisters Dorothy Boyd (Robert), Jacqueline Grant (Bill) and numerous nieces and nephews all in Ontario. She also leaves an extended family of inlaws in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Newfoundland. Charlene was predeceased by her parents, Wilfred and Gertrude Grant of Kingsville, Ontario. Charlene was born in Leamington, Ontario and spent her young life in and around Kingsville, Ontario. As a teenager she worked in the canning industry and a restaurant in Kingsville. In 1970, she decided to visit her sister Dorothy in Petawawa, Ontario and check out the army guys. That December, Charlene married Bill and became a military wife. As a military wife, Charlene got to spent parts of her adult life in the interesting military funspots of Petawawa, Lahr, Edmonton, Gagetown, Cornwallis, and Winnipeg. During this time she was a housewife, mother and worked outside the home. After Charlene started her cancer treatments, she missed the regular visits with her co-workers and the residents at the Wellington, 3161 Grant Avenue. She also missed her regular Thursday night visits and other social functions at Legion Branch #141. The family would like to thank the staff of Cancer Care Manitoba, HSC Emergency Dept., Riverview Palliative Care Unit, the WRHA, VitalAire, and Tache Pharmacy for their exceptional care of Charlene. A special thank you to Dr. Mulder and nurses Jo and Robin for their support on March 24th. Funeral service will be held on April 1st at 2:00 pm with Lt (N)Lenora Grauer of 17 Wg officiating at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, Winnipeg. Those who wish, may pay their respects one hour before the service. Cremation will take place following. In late July there will be a short Memorial Service in Belleville, Ontario followed by the spreading of the ashes at the Belleville Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Charlene's memory to the Canadian Cancer Society, Riverview Health Centre, Palliative Care Unit, 1 Morley Ave., Winnipeg or the charity of ones choosing.
