New Glasgow/Ottawa – Joe died August 22, 2008, in Ottawa, Ontario, at the age of 57 after a courageous three month battle with cancer. Born in New Glasgow, NS, January 19, 1951, Joe was the son of the late John Bertram and Mary O’Neil (Desmond) Borden. He graduated from New Glasgow High School in 1969 and attended St. Francis Xavier University. Following a workplace injury in 2005, Joe dedicated himself to retraining and graduated from CDI College with a certificate in Adult Addictions Counselling in 2008. As a counsellor, Joe was filled with a tremendous sense of pride as he was able to touch the lives of many. In that same spirit, his corneas were donated so that he could continue to contribute to the lives of others. Joe is survived and will be remembered by his friend and companion of 12 years Louise Martel; as well as her daughter, Sandie Martel, and grandchildren Maxime and Nathaniel, and he is survived by his daughter, Deanna (Daniel) Frappier; granddaughter, Mireille; and grandson, Maxime, Halifax, NS; daughter, Natalie Borden, Moncton, NB; step-daughter, Niki Borden, Regina, SK; and his former wife, Beverly Borden, Dartmouth, NS. Joe is also survived by sisters: Ruth (Hugh “Sparky”) Paris, New Glasgow, NS; Quenta (Earl) Clyke and Martha (Richard) Brown, Dartmouth, NS; brothers: John B. Junior, New Glasgow, NS; James “Mont” (Lorraine), Dartmouth, NS; Carmon, Abbotsford, BC; special nephew (brother) Richard, Ottawa, ON; special niece (sister) Darlene (Melvin) Burnside, Suwanee, GA. Joe is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews whom he praised often and teased occasionally. He was predeceased by his sister, Annie Desmond; and several aunts and uncles. Joe leaves us with the legacy of his love for the music and dances of the 1970’s, particularly the music of Joe Tex and “the Bump”. He was affectionately known as ”Joe Boogie”, “Joe College” and “Uncle Joe” by friends and family and “BaBa’ by his granddaughter, Mireille. Joe loved people and established lasting friendships. He was physically active, made many friends playing sports and could often be seen walking and biking around Ottawa. Joe was also well known for his love of cooking. Special thanks are extended to his caregiver, Kerry-Anne Livingstone and the doctors, nurses and staff at the Ottawa General Hospital for their compassionate care, especially Dr. Laurie, Dr. Nixon and nurses Sara and Kate. A funeral service was held Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at Fourth Avenue Baptist Church in Ottawa with the Rev. Ernie Cox officiating. A memorial service to celebrate Joe's life will be held Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 1p.m. in Second United Baptist Church, New Glasgow with Rev. Dr. Morley Shaw officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of R.H. Porter Funeral Homes. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation by request. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Ottawa General Hospital, the Children's Hospital Eastern Ontario (CHEO) or other charity of choice. Joe will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. “One love”.
