SMITH, VALERIE JANICE (POAPS) The death of Valerie Janice Smith occurred at her home in Keswick Ridge, NB. Born in Ottawa, the only daughter of Douglas and Florence Poaps, she belonged to pioneering family that first settled in what is now Upper New York State in 1756. The family came to Canada as Loyalists, Adam Poaps having served in the company of Rangers raised by Colonel Butler. She was educated at Glebe Collegiate, Moulton College, and Carleton College. After her marriage in 1957 work with the CBC in Ottawa, and Toronto, and External Affairs in London made her husband's graduate studies possible, and her continued loving support was responsible for any subsequent success he enjoyed. Above all a loving wife and mother she created warm and stylish homes in Toronto, Ottawa, London, Regina, Barcelona, Prades, and Fredericton. Her restoration of the 1813 Pickard house in Keswick was done to museum standards but she infused it with a warmth and style that was all her own. Her ancient French stone house in the Roussillion city of Prades, in the shadow of Mont Canigou, was the apogee of her domestic gifts and those lucky enough to have shared it will not forget its magic. She is survived by Stuart Allen Smith, her husband of 47 years and by her four children, Douglas (Terry), Matthew (Rose), Rachel (Douglas) Adam (Tascha) and by her beloved grandchildren, Zachary, Lachlan, Jacob, Rebecca , Adam, Robert, Hannah, James, Andrew and Charlotte. The Anglican Service for the Burial of the Dead, celebration of the Eucharist, and interment of ashes will take place at All Saints Anglican Church, Keswick Ridge at 2:00 pm on the 17th day of May 2004 in the presence of her own, her parish family and friends. A partial distribution of ashes will take place sur le pic de Canigou at a later date. The dedicated staff of the Extramural Programme made her wish to remain at home possible, for which service the family offers its thanks.
