LOVE, ROBERT JAMES At the Veterans Health Unit in Fredericton on July 17, 2004, Robert James Love, passed away at the age of 96. Bob Love was born in Glassville where he attended school until he was eleven. The family moved to Fredericton where he continued with his education in Devon and proceeded through Fredericton High School. Bob attended the University of New Brunswick on a Beaverbrook Scholarship. While there he was a member of the varsity hockey team and the debating team. He won the Douglas Gold Medal and was president of the Student Representative Council and class valedictorian upon graduation. He earned degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from UNB as well as Bachelor of Paedogogy from the University of Toronto. He served as teacher at Sussex, Principal of St. Andrews High and Bathurst High Schools. He coached hockey at these schools with great success and served a term as president of the New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association. He joined the North Shore Regiment in 1941 and after the war he went to the University of New Brunswick as a professor of economics. He later became head of the Department of Education at UNB and in 1962 was named as the Dean of Education for the newly formed faculty. He won important changes in the icensing of teachers and organized the Summer School and extension programmes to enable teachers to upgrade their qualifications. He imported people from many walks and from other parts of the world to come and participate. As Dean of Education, he was responsible for new programmes leading to the Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Teaching and Master of Education. He received an honorary Doctorate of Education from the University of Maine and a Doctorate from UNB upon retirement. He has received many awards for teaching. He was a strong supporter of the Canadian College of Teachers and received the George Croskery Award for excellence as well as the New Brunswick Teachers Centennial Award. He served for 9 years as chairman of the Provincial Apprenticeship Committee and Tradesmen's Qualification Board. Bob was a member of the St. Andrews Society, a member of the Fredericton Golf and Curling Club. Her served on the Fredericton School Board. He is survived by a daughter Mary Griffin; grandsons Robert (Alana) of Roswell, Georgia, Andrew of Atlanta, Georgia, John of Norwalk, Connecticut; 2 great grandchildren William Adams Griffin, Elizabeth Love Griffin. He was predeceased by his son Robert Wilfred Love; his wife Hazel and a son-in-law Bill Griffin. A private graveside service will be held. Mary and family will be at home at 8 Acacia Court between 2:00 - 4:30 on Friday July 23rd for visitation. Donations to the UNB Beaverbrook Scholarship Fund and the G. Forbes Elliott Award for Educational Leadership at UNB would be appreciated.
