ALEX RUSSELL

RUSSELL, ALEX Alex passed away in the presence of his family early in the morning of Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at the Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The son of Alexander and Jemima Russell, he was born in Blantyre, Scotland on December 29, 1926, and moved to Canada with his family at the age of three. Alex was raised in Verdun, Quebec, which was, by all accounts, a grand time. He joined the Army during the Second World War, serving as a Corporal and seeing action in Holland in 1944. Upon returning to Canada, Alex left the Army in 1946 following a brief time as a Provost in St. Jean, Quebec. He began his career in the apprenticeship program of the Canadian National Railroad in Montreal's Pointe Ste. Charles yards and became a Master Mechanic, working with both steam and diesel locomotives during the change over. In April of 1962, he moved his family to Gagnon, Quebec, employed by Quebec Cartier Mining Company where, over the years, he worked in Maintenance, the Crusher and Concentrator operations. In 1970, Alex moved down the line to Port Cartier, where he served as Divisional Superintendent for the Maintenance Shop, Maintenance of Way and Ore Handling operations. In 1978, Alex joined Canadian MetChem Consultants of Canada and traveled to Karnataka, India, where he served as Project Manager, Maintenance, at the Iron Ore mining operation in Kudremukh. In 1982 Alex was again on the move, this time to Liberia, West Africa where he worked as Divisional Superintendent, Railroad operations for the National Iron Ore Company in Mano River. During their time overseas, Alex and Evelyn traveled the world. They were especially fond of Europe and returned as often as possible. Alex retired to Gananoque, Ontario in 1985 and moved to Fredericton in 1998. Predeceased by his wife and companion of 51 years, Evelyn, he is survived by his brother, David and his wife Norma of Pointe Claire, Quebec and two sons; Barry and wife Nancy and their sons Zachary and Travis, of Kirkland, WA; and Norman and wife Kathy and their children Max and Elizabeth, of Fredericton. Alex led a great life, traveling the world for work and pleasure. Co-workers and friends from India, Liberia, Quebec, Ontario, Australia and throughout the USA will remember Alex for his wit, great love of life and never-ending generosity. Dad was a great father and a beloved grandfather (Pappy). He is and will be sorely missed by all who had occasion to meet and befriend him. He now joins Evelyn and together are resting at the Oceanview Memorial Cemetery in Saint John, New Brunswick.
