JUDITH NORA (NEE ARROWSMITH) COX

COX, JUDITH NORA (NEE ARROWSMITH) The death of Judith Nora (nee Arrowsmith) Cox of Fredericton, NB, occurred at her home on Sunday, September 26th, 2004. Judith was born in the small seaside town of Redcar, England on 26th October 1910, the oldest of four daughters of the late Alfred Hodgson Arrowsmith and the late Rose Arrowsmith (nee McLauchlan). When she was aged four, Judith and her parents emigrated to Saskatchewan and were among the first settlers in the prairie town of Weyburn. After attending public school and then working as a telephone operator, Judith began her nursing training in Weyburn. In 1943 she married (the late) Kenneth Cox, who was part of the Commonwealth Air Training Scheme stationed in Canada. Her daughter Rosemary was born in Weyburn, SK in 1944. In January 1946 Judith, accompanied by her baby, sailed as a "war bride" on a troop ship from Halifax to England. She took up residence in York where two more daughters, Caroline and Patricia, were born. Judith completed her nursing training in England and nursed in psychiatric and geriatric hospitals until her retirement in England in 1972. Judith always described herself as a "prairie woman" and spoke often about life in "The Dirty Thirties" and the Saskatchewan Ten Year Drought. She returned to Saskatchewan with daughter Rosemary in 1993. In 1996 Judith accompanied Rosemary to Fredericton and lived with Rosemary for the remainder of her life. Judith made friends in Fredericton, particularly VON Nurse Sheila Tissington, President of St. Thomas University Dr. Daniel O'Brien and Valerie O'Brien, Prof. Brian Ouellette from St. Thomas University, The Ven. John Sharpe from Christ Church Parish Church and Foekje Schatz, her home support worker. Although stone deaf, and sometimes disoriented during her final months, Judith retained a sharp mind throughout her life and was keenly interested in world events up to the time of her death. She was pre-deceased by her parents, sisters Maisie and Evangeline, and son in law Reginald Clews. She is survived by sister Ruth Wilson-Bigg from French River, Prince Edward Island; daughters Rosemary Clews from Fredericton, NB, Caroline (Chris) Hammond of Dudley, England, and Patricia Atkinson of York, England; six grandchildren Zenith, Roxanne, Lydia, Amelia, Aaron, and Miriam; and four great-grandchildren Oliver, Arianne, Nathan and Jasmine. There will be no visitation by request. Following cremation, a memorial service will take place at Christ Church (Parish) Church on Friday, October 1st, 2004 at 3:00 PM with The Ven. John Sharpe officiating. Her remains will be interred in the family plot in Weyburn, SK, opened for her baby sister Evangeline in 1927. No flowers please, but contributions may be made to the Judith Cox Bursary Fund c/o Bob Edgett, St. Thomas University, Fredericton, NB E3B 5G3 or to Christ Church Parish Church, 245 Westmorland Street, Fredericton, NB E3B 3L9.
